Hi my name is Lynne , I am a keen gardener and basically I love nature and am passionate about the world we live in. Plant my planet has been a thought an idea, a dream and and I believe it also can positively be part of a solution.
To me the problem for the decline in pollinating insects - especially bees & butterflies is not just one main factor. There are multiple contributing factors; widespread use of insecticides, pesticides, general air pollution, massive reduction in natural habitats due to urbanisation and on and on the list goes. These all contribute to the compounding effect in reducing suitable habitats and flora and fauna for pollinating insects. Without their tireless and unconditional daily oblivion to us and our needs they go about doing what they do best which is fly from plant to plant in search of nectar (food) for themselves. In this process they transport the pollen collected on their bodies and then transfer this from flower to flower. This pollination is crucial for all plants to produce seeds and fruit.
90% of all plants need pollination with the help of outside sources such as insects, birds, bats, and even some mammals.
Crucially we need this pollination to enable fruit and vegetables crops to grow in abundance. Using the pesticides and insecticides we have reduced the number of these wonderful creatures and then we have also reduced their food sources - so the main contributing factor to the problem is us.
Plant my planet wants to help provide the solution. By encouraging people like you to buy from retailers or grow from seed and plant each calendar month a different variety of flowering plant in your urban space, whether it be from a small pot to a large estate then we will month by month, for the whole year increase annually and collectively an abundance of plants for them to choose from. Even in the winter months lone bees and butterflies will venture out on a warm day to find food. By increasing the no of flowers available the pollinators will also readily visit vegetable crops and help with their pollination. The increase in choice of pollinating flowers will also help with the health and well being of the pollinators by reducing the distance they have to travel and increasing variety in their diet. Just like us a diet on one food alone is nutritionally devoid.
We will also be working with the commercial sector to enable people to buy with knowledge. Lots of people have no idea about what to plant or where. What flowers are suitable.
So that is me and why I see Plant my planet see this as a win win solution - nature wins by our helping to replace, replenish and revive and we win by seeing more bees butterflies and floral beauty in our outdoor spaces as well as growing healthier crops of fruit and vegetables - what is not to love?
